Solachi Ramanathan

Founder

Every well made thing has an inherent order and purpose that determines the form — I want to discover the essence in every object that I design.

Solachi Ramanathan is the founder and principal architect at Urban Workshop, a spatial design studio whose work includes Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design & Product Design. Her work is sensitive to the context, users, materials and resources.

She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from School of Architecture and Planning, Chennai and a Master’s Degree in Housing & Urbanism from Architectural Association in London. She has worked with Mathew & Ghosh Architects in Bangalore and Vikram Phadke in Chennai, where she gained experience in Architecture and Interior Design.

Her exposure to Indian architecture and craft during her childhood drives her interest in the intersection of craft, making and technology. She is inspired by her experiences in London and through her travels around Europe to create vibrant and stimulating environments in cities.

Design philosophy

At the studio, we create lighting, furniture and objects that are thoughtfully made in India.

The practice explores the intersection of industrial design and artisan craftsmanship, balancing structure with adaptability, precision with intuition. The products are characterized by their simplicity and timelessness and conceptualized through a poetic yet rigorous interpretation of function, material and technology.

MATERIAL

Solai seeks beauty in simple forms, structure, balance and rhythm. At the studio, We are interested in the true character of materials and their combined expressions. We see aging as a process that only adds to the patina of an object, making it more beautiful over time. All of the products come in natural finishes, exposed to the elements without any protective lacquers.

A home should be lit by soft and gentle light that keeps you in tune with night and day and the nature around you.

"A lot of my work starts with material and the form it takes. Each material has inherent properties, for example glass is fragile and filters light. Bricks, water and air have life when they come together."
